Extrawheel Bicycle Trailer

Light-weight luggage trailers

Eye-catching Ad-trailers

In 2006 extrawheel introduced into the market the world's only bicycle trailer with a large wheel, Extrawheel – Classic, which was well received in all continents. Its successor is Voyager – lighter, shorter, stronger and more stable.

Extrawheel trailer is intended for being hauled by any bicycle with a wheel diameter of 26", 27" or 28" and carrying loads with a total weight of up to 30_kg. (The bicycle may additionally be loaded in the traditional way).

A large wheel placed close to the centre of load gravity, record-breaking lightweight performance and the quick and super rigid fastening turned out to be a watershed solution not only where the car remains a luxury. Riding your bike, even with a great load, in the city as well as on narrow lanes, you just forget about the trailer. The cyclist quickly gets used to the somewhat different than usual reactions of the vehicle; even when the luggage is placed asymmetrically. Carrying a smaller load will even cause anxiety to the cyclist; he will look behind to make sure it's still there. Those who may be interested in a quick and reversible conversion of their genuine "mountaineer" or "roadster" into a truck are invited to see for themselves how in practice such a conversion:

  • will amaze them with the stability of the bicycle-trailer set following from lower centre of gravity;
  • will upgrade durability of the bicycle's rear wheel, which often happens to be overloaded;
  • will reduce the tendency of the front wheel(a rising tendency when loading the carrying rack) to lose contact with the ground when riding steeply uphill;
  • will reduce the stopping distance where a load placed high on the bike will make the back wheel lose contact with the ground sooner than when it's pushed at the axle level;
  • will facilitate hikes where it's convenient to carry typical bags or backpacks;
  • will reduce resistance of the bicycle-trailer's movement on soft ground by spreading the load over a larger surface and the bike's initial hardening of the track for the trailer wheel following behind;
  • will facilitate getting on and off the bike, which for some people may be quite inconvenient when the space behind the saddle is filled with load.
Advantages of the extrawheel construction

Remarkable stability. A great pile of luggage on the trailer is leaning on curves together with the bike displaying a lightweight performance which is causing general amazement. This is owing to the inconspicuous-looking fastening (fork) which at the same time is unusually rigid. Its arms go right in the middle of the ball-shaped joints and they only transfer longitudinal stress; just like a stick which is hard to break by pressing its ends. That's why they can be so light and thin.

The trailer is also marked by:

  • record-breaking lightweight performance – Extrawheel is the world's lightest one-wheel bicycle trailer (3,9 kg Voyager, 4.8 kg Classic with a 28-inch average quality wheel);
  • manouverability – retaining the bicycle's turning radius (the wheel is not placed behind but between the load, and the distance between the trailer's wheel and the bicycle's back wheel is smaller than the bicycle's own wheel space);
  • little rolling resistance (use of a large wheel);
  • functionality and simple operation – quick attaching and detaching of the fork (fastening); easy fixing of almost any load (self-locking buckle) and releasing it with a single movement of one hand;
  • easy storage – the trailer is not much wider than the wheel itself;
  • reduced risk of injuries (no hard trailer components protruding from the side);
  • wide range of wheels to choose from (large wheel);
  • minimum load on the bicycle's rear axle (placing the wheel close to the centre of load gravity);
  • simplicity and safety of the fastening – making use of the fork arms' resilience (specially quenched steel) instead of complicated clasps plus emergency detaching available in case of accident;
Spare wheel

Extrawheel as the world's only large-wheel bicycle trailer may also turn out to be helpful in a situation when cracking of the front wheel spoke and its friction against the brake or mudguard supports will make it impossible to continue the journey. Transferring the twisted wheel to the trailer, which is less loaded and will ensure the wheel greater freedom of movement, may turn out to be a salutary solution, especially if you're far away from civilisation.

Bicycles

Extrawheel trailers can be attached to any bicycle; with any wheel diameter, suspension system or type of brakes. In those cases where the axle is constructed with a geared hub mechanism in the rear wheel, it is possible to fix special nuts beside the axle, for instance where the carrying rack supports are screwed down.

Apart from typical wheel dimensions which Extrawheel is designed for (20", 26", 27", 28"), in 2009 we are planning to modify the fork and frame for bicycles with 29" wheels. 29-ers require a wider fork which can be custom-made without additional costs – all you have to do is enter "Pugsley" in the comments section when you place your order – the time for completing the order is about two weeks.

What the reviewers say...
"An amazingly cheap and light one-wheel trailer from Poland: [...] It tracks and rolls extremely well - it really was easy to forget it was there. Attaching and detaching is very fast and easy too, and the hitch proved secure in use.
[...]
The light weight, great handling and inherent simplicity are all strong points in its favour, and the price is hard to fault too."

"The most ingenious bicycle trailer the world has ever seen."

"I am very pleased with the performance of the trailer. I have been testing it with city, road and trail riding and find that it does exactly as advertised - very tight, slow speed circles, climbing curbs and logs, as well as tracking very stable, on fast, paved descents. I look forward to touring with it and will recommend it to other cyclists that I meet."

Art Kernaghan, Guelph, ON. Canada
[...] Having taken it for test rides, we can say with a large measure of confidence that Extrawheel is an almost ideal solution. Thanks to the use of one large wheel the trailer offers a perfect ride and very good handling of obstructions. With the trailer behind, you can easily travel even in very tough off-road conditions. There's no need to worry about the bicycle's turning ability being reduced, as the turning radius does not change.
[...] Also to the trailer's credit is its ordinary and simple but at the same time highly effective hauling system and very low weight. Adding to all these advantages, Extrawheel is relatively cheap. To obtain a similar loading space with the use of panniers it would be necessary to spend double the amount.

"Extrawheel trailer not only does an excellent job in everyday use and tourism, but is also helpful when you're in for such special missions as providing for large cycling events. Riding with the trailer behind, you don't have to think of passing obstructions with a wide clearance, like you do with two-wheel trailers, and its lightweight performance allows you to move about unrestrained in any conditions.

ADVERT TRAILERS

An inexpensive and exceptionally attractive alternative to any advertising campaign. Our trailers, with their surprising construction and environmental friendliness, do not burden with any petrol or parking costs. Capable of going where crowds love to gather, places often impenetrable by stationary advertising and cars, they have unknown-to-date, enormous power of influence. Additionally, they facilitate contact with a real human being, one ready to dispense information, a brochure or a product sample, or to sell the advertised product.

Anyone interested in buying or renting an advert trailer, please contact the Promotions and Advertising Office: John Stainthorpe e-mail: marketing@cyclesense.co.uk

DRY panniers - set of two panniers

Application - to be mounted both to the Extrawheel Voyager trailer and to the bicycle's rear carrying rack.

Securo 680 - PVC-coated polyester fabric. Less durable than Cordura, but thanks to an ideally smooth surface is easier to maintain clean and completely water-proof.

Dry are made to be used where water is the dominant element. They dread no downpours or crossing rushing streams. Coated on both sides, the Securo 680 material not only doesn't leak water, but it doesn't absorb it at all! The pannier panels are welded, which is why there is no problem with leaks on the seams, as there aren't any seams. Additional advantages of the Dry series include the attractive price, low weight and very large capacity.

Material: Securo 680
Capacity: 60 litres (whole set)
Weight: 1650 g (whole set)

Construction:

Pannier assembly

Fix pressing hook to the lower part of carrying rack in bicycle or Extrawheel Voyager trailer, then using the handle raise the pannier up and fasten the load-bearing hooks on the upper edge of the rack... done!

NOTE: Prior to first assembly of the panniers, adjust the length of the pressing strap to the rack. Otherwise you will risk unfastening of the panniers in riding! The tension force should make resistance during pannier assembly (this is especially vital with heavy panniers).

NOTE: To ensure high tightness the closing of the panniers should be rolled up at least twice.

Transporting bags

We would like to conclude our offer with completely waterproof (even under water) transporting bags which will give your luggage excellent protection against dust, water and humidity. Their large capacity (60 litres) will allow you to carry a total of 120 litres of luggage fitted to the shape of the bags. The lack of unnecessary buckles and hard edges will facilitate filling the bags and at the same time will protect the trailer's cover against wearing through.

Technical Data:
  • capacity: max. 60 litres
  • weight: 850g
  • dimensions: diameter: 35cm, height before rolling up: 90cm
  • tight rolled-up closure
  • polypropylene unbreakable buckles
  • special-process bonded seams
  • convenient carrying handle.

In order for the bags to be waterproof under water, the closure should be rolled up at least four times

Advice - packing panniers and transportation bags
  • General rule: centre of gravity should be as low as possible.
  • We place the heaviest load possibly low and close to the inner wall of the pannier or transportation bags.
  • The left and right pannier (or bags) should weigh the same - wrong balancing will make riding somewhat difficult.
  • When you have arrived at correct load balancing, you should remember or write down which things go to which pannier, and you will avoid unnecessary effort during repacking the next day or desperate ransacking of all panniers in search of some knick-knack.
  • Try to pack the panniers thematically, i.e. so that you don't need to open all the panniers to prepare a meal. It makes life easier to put all the knick-knacks necessary for every stay overnight in one pannier, and you will avoid a mess in your tent.
  • Protect food tins and other sharp-edged objects for instance between clothes so that don't wear through the material.
  • Make sure all bottles (for instance with oil, shampoo, suntan cream) are tight and for safety reasons always put them in plastic bags!
  • Always put containers with gas for the cooker far away from the outer wall of the pannier to protect them against crushing, for instance during a fall. The same applies to fragile equipment, for instance laptops, cameras etc.
  • If you are using a petrol cooker, store the cooker and petrol separately from food which is not packed hermetically (for instance bread) not to risk poisoning or bad taste experience...
  • Separate clean and dirty clothes by putting them into plastic bags, which will additionally protect them against moisture. Avoid putting wet clothes into the panniers, even in plastic bags. Better put them under the flap.
  • In nasty conditions pack the sleeping bag into a plastic bag. Even if you have water-proof panniers after several rainy days the filling of the sleeping bag will start attracting moisture from the air, while its drying in field conditions will most certainly turn out very difficult.
  • Don't forget to put the things most needed in a given day on top in the panniers, for instance raincoat, food for the next meal etc.
  • Put tools, the first-aid-kit and other emergency accessories in a separate pocket so that you have quick access to them.
  • Specially valuable objects, such as photographic equipment, documents, money, etc. should best be put in a small pannier mounted to the handlebars which can be easily dismounted at stops. Don't keep all your money in one place! When going abroad make a Xerox copy of your passport and other important documents and keep them separately from the originals.
